Strategy for Biotech Start-Ups

Unlock your start-up's potential with our specialised services for the biotechnology sector

What strategy support does a biotech start-up need?

Our process

  1. Life science specialists

Scientific and commercial context is built into the work from the start.

  2. Founder-focused

We concentrate on the commercial decisions creating the most pressure now.

  3. Strategy first

Marketing and execution follow the commercial direction rather than replacing it.

  4. Practical roadmap

Recommendations are translated into actions the leadership team can use.

Is the science progressing faster than the commercial plan?

The challenge

Founders often understand the technology better than anyone. Deciding which customers, markets, applications and commercial opportunities deserve attention first is a different problem.

A promising biotech platform may have several potential uses. Trying to pursue all of them at the same time can consume limited resources without resolving the questions that matter most.

The difficult part is not finding things you could do. It is deciding what should happen first.

How we can help

What can a biotech start-up strategy include?

Every project is tailored to the company and the decisions it needs to make. The work can include the following areas.

  1. Customer & market priorities

Define and prioritise customer groups, applications and early market opportunities.

  2. Value proposition & positioning

Translate scientific and technical advantages into a clear commercial proposition.

  3. Competitor & market assessment

Understand alternatives, market structure and where your proposition can credibly stand apart.

  4. Route-to-market strategy

Assess direct sales, distributors, OEM relationships, licensing and strategic partnerships.

  5. Investor & corporate materials

Help make the commercial opportunity and route to market as clear as the underlying science.

  6. Commercial roadmap

Turn competing priorities into a practical sequence of actions and next decisions.

Make the commercial case as clear as the science

Why our approach is different

We start by understanding the technology, the problem it solves and the ambitions of the founders. We then look at the business from the outside in.

That means asking who is likely to buy, what alternatives already exist, how your proposition is different and which commercial route makes sense for the company you are building.

  • Who should you sell to first?
  • Which application deserves priority?
  • How should the technology be positioned?
  • Should you sell direct, use distributors, license or partner?
  • Which activities should happen now, and which can wait?

How the work moves forward

A bespoke strategic project

Our strategic projects are bespoke to each client and can last from four weeks to several months, depending on the scope and requirements. Throughout the project, the Pivotal Scientific Limited team works closely with you, meeting at least weekly to guide the work and keep decisions moving.

  1. Agree the scope

We define the commercial questions, priorities, stakeholders and outputs around your business rather than forcing the project into a standard framework.

  2. Work closely together

Your team and ours meet at least weekly. This keeps the project collaborative, gives stakeholders regular opportunities to challenge the thinking and allows the work to develop as new findings emerge.

  3. Document the recommendations

Reports, roadmaps and strategies are produced in your preferred format, with findings and proposals clearly documented against the agreed scope.

  4. Support what comes next

One strategic project often leads naturally into another. We value long-term client relationships and can continue supporting the business as priorities change and the company moves through its growth journey.

Innova Biosciences – Commercialisation strategy and growth support

    The Challenge:

Innova Biosciences had developed innovative conjugation and labelling technologies, including its Lightning-Link platform, but required support to maximise the commercial potential of its scientific innovations. The company wanted guidance on how to build a scalable commercial strategy that would support long-term growth.

    Our Approach & Outcome:

PSL founder Tim Bernard joined the board and worked closely with the leadership team to develop and implement the company’s commercialisation strategy. This included reviewing distribution channels, refining customer targeting and messaging, analysing competitors, developing marketing strategy and establishing objective performance measures. Tim also recruited, trained and mentored commercial personnel responsible for implementing the strategy, helping the business build internal commercial capability.

Between 2009 and 2017, PSL supported Innova Biosciences at both strategic and operational levels. The company successfully expanded the market reach of its technologies, strengthened its commercial infrastructure and achieved sustained year-on-year growth. The business was ultimately acquired by Expedeon before later becoming part of Abcam.
