What Is Life Science Strategic Planning?

Life science strategic planning is the process of defining where your business is today, where you want it to be in the future, and the actions required to get there.

A successful strategic plan aligns commercial objectives, product development, marketing, distribution, operational capabilities, and financial goals into a single roadmap.

For life science companies, strategic planning often includes:

• Market expansion opportunities
• Product portfolio development
• Distributor network strategy
• Commercialisation planning
• Acquisition opportunities
• Exit preparation
• Resource allocation and investment priorities

Why Life Science Companies Need External Strategic Advice

Working with a third party offers you an unbiased view and can often evolve previously unconsidered areas for growth. You might want to expand into new areas. You could be preparing to exit or enter a field like IVD reagents and diagnostics. We will work with you to provide strategic plans which will assist in all these endeavours.

For 15 years, we have worked with organisations, from their founding as academic spin-outs through to successful sales, and exit for their founders. We work with both emerging companies and larger corporations.

These larger corporations are looking to evolve their strategy within the life science reagent field through organic growth or acquisition. To date, we have helped more than 100 companies assess and evolve their strategic plans.

Case Study

From preclinical assets to commercial portfolios, we help biotech companies achieve critical business milestones: faster time-to-market, lower cost of goods, capital-efficient scale-up, and maximized exit valuations. Our expertise delivers measurable commercial impact—across every stage of the development lifecycle.

Innova Biosciences – Commercialisation strategy and growth support

The Challenge: Innova Biosciences had developed innovative conjugation and labelling technologies, including its Lightning-Link platform, but required support to maximise the commercial potential of its scientific innovations. The company wanted guidance on how to build a scalable commercial strategy that would support long-term growth.
Our Approach & Outcome: PSL founder Tim Bernard joined the board and worked closely with the leadership team to develop and implement the company's commercialisation strategy. This included reviewing distribution channels, refining customer targeting and messaging, analysing competitors, developing marketing strategy and establishing objective performance measures. Tim also recruited, trained and mentored commercial personnel responsible for implementing the strategy, helping the business build internal commercial capability.
Between 2009 and 2017, PSL supported Innova Biosciences at both strategic and operational levels. The company successfully expanded the market reach of its technologies, strengthened its commercial infrastructure and achieved sustained year-on-year growth. The business was ultimately acquired by Expedeon before later becoming part of Abcam.

Multi billion dollar US research tools and clinical market company

The Challenge: The client wanted to accelerate growth of its antibody portfolio, primarily by expanding products and services (not just increasing sales). Despite strong internal scientific and product management teams, they wanted an external commercialisation specialist to benchmark the current portfolio strategy and identify opportunities to increase the pace of new launches relative to key competitors.
Our Approach & Outcome: PSL reviewed performance data, routes to market and existing licensing arrangements. We then developed a practical expansion plan that strengthened in-licensing and partnership structures, and introduced OEM–in opportunities to broaden the portfolio and speed up range growth.

Multi-billion dollar global life science and diagnostics organisation

The Challenge: The client holds a market leading range of instrumentation and consumables but recognised biological reagents would be a valuable addition to their offering and future product development. They wanted domain experts to support them in outside in exploration of the market and key players to develop both their inorganic and organic growth strategies.
Our Approach & Outcome: PSL undertook several deep outside in examinations of organisations offering strong portfolios of biologicals. We explored synergistic opportunities (product and finance based) to the Client's current portfolio, identifying gaps and recommending additional bolt-on acquisitions. Following acquisition, PSL has continued to advise on new product development from a scientific perspective, assessing market potential and advising on R&D direction for initial product launches.
